Persecutor to Preacher Part 2: How Farmer Evangelists Are Transforming Villages

Nigeria’s rich agricultural land sustains countless villages, where farming is not just a way of life but a means of survival. In these communities, Call of Hope’s Farmer Evangelists, led by Abdul are bringing more than just agricultural knowledge—they are planting the seeds of faith in Jesus Christ.

Planting Seeds of Faith Through Agriculture

Abdul and his team of Farmer Evangelists are trained in effective small-scale agricultural techniques, which they use to assist their neighbors while opening doors for conversations about Jesus. They begin by leasing a plot of land and planting crops, drawing curiosity from nearby villagers who want to improve their own farm productivity. Questions about farming methods and fertilizers naturally lead to discussions about faith, creating opportunities for relational evangelism. As more villagers come to Christ, churches are established, believers are discipled, and communities are transformed by the power of the Gospel.

A Growing Movement of Faith

The Farmer Evangelist project has seen remarkable success. Over 45 evangelists have been placed in villages across the region, and many churches have been planted. As the Gospel continues to spread and more Muslims seek Christ, Call of Hope prioritizes discipleship training. Every month, Farmer Evangelists gather for encouragement and in-depth study of God’s Word. Despite strong opposition, the truth of Jesus Christ is setting villagers free from the chains of Islam.

Jesus said in John 4:13–14, "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." This promise was powerfully fulfilled in one Nigerian village where faith, perseverance, and the love of Christ changed everything.

A Village Transformed by Love

For decades, a small Nigerian village was plagued by poverty and deep-rooted tension between Christians and Muslims. Persecution was common, and Christians often faced hostility from Islamic leaders. Yet, rather than responding with fear or anger, Abdul and his team chose to show love. They provided agricultural support and farming supplies to their Muslim neighbors, demonstrating Christ’s love in action.

At first, the villagers were skeptical. Why would Christians show kindness to those who had mistreated them? Slowly, their hearts softened as they witnessed the sincerity and compassion of their Christian neighbors. One of the village leaders, deeply moved by their generosity, approached Abdul with an urgent request: Could Call of Hope help bring water to the village?

For years, families had been forced to walk miles to access a distant well. Numerous attempts to dig a well in the village had failed due to the rocky terrain. The Call of Hope team committed to prayer and fasting, believing that God could provide a miracle. However, after days of drilling, only dry dust came from the borehole. Undeterred, Abdul and the Farmer Evangelists continued to pray, trusting in God’s faithfulness. Late one evening, as the drilling crew prepared to abandon their efforts, they decided to go just a little deeper. Then, before the eyes of the entire village, water suddenly gushed high into the air!

“This Is Jesus Water!”

The village erupted in joy and amazement. Overcome with emotion, the village Imam shouted, "THIS IS JESUS WATER!" In the days that followed, a special ceremony was held to inaugurate the new well, attended by all the local elders. Then, in a shocking announcement, the village Imam publicly declared that, after witnessing the love and power of the Christian God, all Muslims in the village were now free to become Christians!

This well did more than provide clean water for drinking, cooking, and irrigation—it became a symbol of the Living Water that Jesus offers to all who believe. Through the faithfulness of Abdul and the Farmer Evangelists, an entire village experienced not only physical renewal but also spiritual rebirth.

The Gospel Continues to Flow

The impact of the Farmer Evangelist project continues to grow, bringing hope to villages across Nigeria. As the love of Christ is demonstrated through practical help and unwavering faith, more and more hearts are opening to the Gospel. What began as a simple act of kindness—teaching farmers better agricultural techniques—has blossomed into a powerful movement of transformation.

God is at work in the most unexpected places, using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Through the gift of water and the message of the Gospel, lives are being changed, and communities are being redeemed. This is just one of many stories where faith and perseverance are bringing the hope of Jesus to those who need it most.
